Is a BA in Human Resources a stupid degree

Is a BA in Human Resources a stupid degree?
Not sure if I'm asking that right but I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Resources. I am now pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching simply because I realized I want to work with children and not in business. At a family dinner, my boyfriends uncle asked me what I majored in during college and I told him HR and he said "You can major in that??!!" as though I told him I majored in something silly or something he's never heard of. It really hurt me and it's been making me wonder if when I'm done with my MA, people are not going to hire me because I have a stupid degree. Let me know what you think. Thanks guys.

I think Human Resources is a good degree, people pretty much know that it falls under the Business umbrella and you can use a Business degree in almost every field.

No HR is not a stupid degree. You actually made a good choice, because now you will have 2 degrees that can be useful. I have heard from several different people in the business field that women who have HR jobs are very well respected and have good job security. When you become a teacher you will also have some very valuable skills that you learned form your first degree. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Hi, A degree in Human Resources might mean you have insights into the needs of jobs and people. Not a bad or stupid thing to have skills of that nature.

How can I prepare myself for a job after graduation

How can I prepare myself for a job after graduation?
I am currently working in the social services field as a adoptions specialist. I decided about two years ago that I wanted to change career fields and began working on a MA in Human Resource Management. I have no experience in payroll or any management positions. Now that I am close to a year from graduating, I wanted to know how I can prepare myself for a job in that field. I thought about a internship but not sure if that will work...open to any suggestions.

An internship would be the best way, if you can commit to one on top of your schoolwork. If you don't know how to go about finding one yourself, use your school's career center or talk to your professors. You might also consider volunteering somewhere. And if none of that's possible, then try to find a way to get some extra training in payroll, assuming you don't feel you've covered it adequately in your coursework; if you have, then you can list it as "relevant coursework" on your resume or address it in your cover letter.

MM is right, an internship is a good idea. If you have trouble finding them in your area, you might also want to think about job shadowing. Job shadowing involves following someone around who does the job you want to do. Not in a stalker way though, lol. Call around to some local companies (ones that have HR offices on site) and tell them you are a grad student looking to shadow someone in their HR office for a day (or week, whatever). This is a good way to see what you might be doing ... and a good way to get your name out there to companies that might be hiring in the future.

The MBA is still at or close to the top of graduate degrees. Because of the accounting and finance that is part of an MBA corporations seek out MBA graduates. Don't get me wrong the HRM major is a good one also. It's just that you can do more with a MBA. A MBA could get a job in Human Resources but it would be harder for someone with the MA HRM to get a job in accounting.

JDM, it depends on what you want to do in work. I think business administration is a broader field, so you will probably have more options for work and in the future. Human resources isn't really related to organizational psychology. Human resources has to do with personnel & policies pertaining to such.

Jorj the answer to this question depends largely on what you are most comfortable with. Are you more satisfied as a people type person or working with management and the strategic and developmental stages of the company? The chanches are you will make more money with the Business Mange, but knowing you I believe you would be happier developing and studying and working with the people who are actually deploying real solutions in the real world. Put in more simple terms, are you better with the people developing Theories or the people applying them?Personality Jorj I would go with the Human Resources. That will give you a far better avenue in which to make the Impacts of which we have so often spoke of.There is no significance in the money possibilities but I would be far happier developing Human potential than having to watch my back in the dog-eat-dog environment of Business Administration. I know you have about eight months to make a final decision on this,so why not do some pro and con considering .Remember their is your family to consider, there is your own personal happiness for about 45 years considering your age,and not finally but important are the Goals you have set for yourself. Jorj think this over carefully and we can give the matter more intense discussion in the near future.I have merely laid out some foundations.Later we can get into some more significant details.Always Paps...larry m Sorry about the misspellings Jorj, for example chances and Management.Jorj also give it your best this week...(you understand)...
